Father's Day, Returning Home

Aug 03 2015

My first Father’s Day with my wife, Rachel, and my daughter, Riley, was truly a great day I will always remember. To start, I put on my new ‘Coolest Dad Ever’ shirt, and the three of us headed out for a new coffee shop downtown for a sip or two of Joe – since Rachel knows that’s my favorite way to start a day. After that, we moved on to Rachel’s big surprise for us – a trip to the Phoenix Children’s Museum!

Long Live the King

Jul 12 2015

When the time came for Career Day this past spring at my wife’s elementary school in Phoenix, I cleared my evening, planning to come in with notebooks, press badges, and journalism stories like I had the year prior. Then, the school had brought in a handful of professionals, many of them parents, to answer questions about our respective fields to some of the older grade levels in the school.

The interview of all interviews... so far

May 26 2015

It’s amazing enough to do what I love: writing about a wide variety of subjects, and helping people around my own community tell their stories. But I will be honest – writing an article on a high-profile public figure is a whole different creature; especially when the public figure is a personal role model.

Checking in with Riley... and Happy Anniversary

May 18 2015

I know it has been a while since I posted here last, but if my last post was any hint; our newborn has made things a little more interesting around the house. Baby Riley is getting really big; not to mention smiling more and more, which is a change from the serious face she has had most of the time so far. She is sleeping through the night, keeps her food down, and best of all, she loves, LOVES when I sing to her. I truly hope she grows to love music as much as I do.

Welcome Home

Jan 12 2015

If you have been following my prior entries here, you know how very excited, as well as very nervous, this whole endeavor of becoming parents for the first time has made me. I want to do a good job, I want to be a great father and role model…. And, I want to NOT drop the baby.

Daddy Boot Camp

Oct 22 2014

With my baby girl well on her way, I am running around soaking up all the knowledge and advice I can. I want to be as sure as I can be that I will do a great job. I am reading the books. I am visiting the websites. I am asking other parents. And this past weekend, I head down the road to the hospital for Daddy Boot Camp.

Going Home...

Oct 18 2014

With my wife and I preparing to welcome our first little one into our waiting arms, we have been pretty busy. From converting our spare room into a nursery for our little girl, to organizing baby showers (one here in Arizona, one back home in Michigan), it has been an exciting ride so far… and we have just begun.

October: The Record-A-Day Project

Oct 01 2014

Music is clearly a huge part of my life. I listen to music all the time. I play guitar and sing – often my own original songs. And as a journalist, I find myself writing for a lot of arts and entertainment publications, helping music groups and artists tell their story. Without music, I clearly wouldn’t be where I am today.

Fitting the pieces together

Aug 27 2014

Sometimes, there is nothing that comes close to the high you get from really being productive, really getting a lot done. I have spoken with a number of musical groups lately, in writing features for my freelance online magazine(s), and sometimes I can tell where the article should go – what the main story is for the group or the performer – before I sit down to write – sometimes. Other times, like this past week, it takes a while to put the picture together.

Meet Matt Marn

Matt is an experienced journalist living in Surprise, Arizona. He is currently freelancing, reporting on people, organizations, and events that help change the community around us for the better. With his feature style of writing, he shows the deeper side of the story. Matt also writes on local musical performers and groups around Phoenix, thanks in no small part to his newly deepened love for music. Within the last few years, he has picked up the guitar, and moved on to play in jam sessions around the Valley. He uses his growing network of musical connections to help continue to tell the stories of people around the community who have a great story to tell – and in this case, a great song to sing.
